True 8K Immersion That Finally Lets You Forget the Gear and Focus on the Action

The leap to 8K spherical video on the GoPro MAX2 is functionally transformative for my workflow because it solves the biggest issue I used to have with 360 content: resolution loss when reframing. Now, when I pull a standard 16:9 flat video out of the 360 sphere, the resulting footage is incredibly crisp, retaining fine details in textures like tree bark, snow, or water spray that used to get muddy. The stitching algorithm is virtually invisible, handling complex lighting transitions between the lenses with zero exposure steps or jarring lines. Even when I switch over to shooting 29MP still photos, the dynamic range is impressive; I can pull distinct highlights from the sky and deep shadows from the foreground without the image falling apart, making this a legitimate tool for high-end photography, not just video.Navigating the interface on the touch screen feels fluid and intuitive, effectively bridging the gap between a rugged tool and a smart device. I love that I can instantly toggle between the immersive 360 mode and the traditional “Hero” mode. In Hero mode, it operates exactly like a standard action cam, which means I don’t need to carry two separate devices. The HyperSmooth stabilization is frankly distinct from anything else I have used; I tested the horizon leveling by literally spinning the camera 360 degrees while riding, and the horizon stayed perfectly locked and flat in the playback. It effectively removes the nausea-inducing shake often associated with handheld 360 footage, delivering a cinematic smoothness that usually requires heavy post-production work. The hardware durability of the GoPro MAX2 gives me the peace of mind to actually use it in the environments it was designed for. The easy replaceable lenses are a genius addition; previously, a scratched lens meant the camera was toast, but now I can swap them out in seconds if I take a bad spill on gravel. I took the camera swimming without a housing, and the waterproofing held up flawlessly, with the screen remaining responsive even with water droplets on the surface. The build feels dense and premium, dissipating heat well even during long 8K recording sessions.Audio is often the forgotten hero of action cameras, but the 6-microphone array here is stellar. It captures true ambisonic sound, meaning when I reframe my video to look left, the audio shifts to match that perspective, creating a deeply immersive experience for the viewer. The wind reduction algorithms are aggressive without sounding robotic, preserving the natural tone of my voice even when I am biking into a headwind. Combined with a battery life that easily lasts through a heavy morning of shooting—handling the heavy processing load of 8K without draining instantly—this camera has become the single most versatile piece of equipment in my gear bag.

    Makes recording so much easier!

The media could not be loaded.

This thing is legit! I had a go pro several years ago, and it was fine, but this one is so much better it’s not comparable. I’ve only used it a few days snowboarding, but what little bit I’ve messed with it, it makes outstanding videos, and very cool ways to edit them. You can select 1 person on your video, and the camera will stay on them no matter how your head or body turns. Not ex sure how it pulls that off. Also, it can see everywhere up, down and all around! The battery doesn’t last as long as I hoped, but it’s definitely not a deal breaker. It’s super easy to use, especially with the app. You will probably need to pay for a monthly storage fee for uploading the videos because they are so large, you will run out of storage quickly in your phone.

    Awesome camera!

This camera is great. There will be a bit of a learning curve because it is so packed with features, but the user interface is pretty intuitive. Lots of attachments are available at low prices so it is very versatile. Battery life is pretty good, used about 50% in an hour running in 360 time lapse mode. Camera is well made and does not require any spyware with permissions to everything in your phone to activate it like the insta360 does.

This thing DOES NOT do anything that it claims to

Let me save you a ton of money and frustration: do not buy this. What it claims is very seriously false advertising, and here are a few examples:- This thing overheats in temperatures it should be designed for. I put it in my hermit crab terrarium to try to get some up close shots of the crabs, which is kept between 80 – 82 degrees F, and it overheats after 5 minutes. Doesn’t matter what video mode you set it to or anything, it overheats no matter what. You would think that something that will be used a ton outdoors, especially during summer time, could handle higher temperatures, but it can’t. This is without a case or any extras, this is the raw camera sitting in an 80 degree terrarium.- The battery life is abysmal. On the package it claims you can get ~ 2 hours with 4k 360 video, but you can really only get about 36 minutes at the lowest resolution and single-camera settings. Oh yeah, and I put it in the fridge to make sure it didn’t overheat while I was testing the battery life- The only way to get the camera initialized is by using the GoPro Quik app, which is a really bad user experience. The only functional tab in the whole app is the camera app, which has very few options. The rest of the tabs are advertisements for premium features to convince you to upgrade.- No GoPro camera supports 360 live streaming, including this unit which was released about 6 months ago- If you want to live stream, you can only do it in 1080p mode, and you need a PREMIUM GoPro account to do so, even for free services like YouTube- The videos it creates are full of artifacts no matter what settings you try. I am pretty confident that these artifacts are coming from the CMOS sensor itself and not the video encoder because the unit overheatsThis was my first GoPro purchase, and I can confidently say it will be my last. This experience really feels like the company is a marketing engine that earns through brand recognition and not through quality products. It would be one thing if it were just the camera having issues, and I would gladly return it and give it a second chance, but given how the Quik app is, the deception about features and requirements to use them, I can say that this is all almost by design. They don’t care about the camera, the whole thing is designed to be a subscription service that keeps you on the hook with false promises for as long as possible.Do yourself a favor, and do not buy the GoPro Max 2.

    Very happy with purchase

Perfect packaging and product. It has everything to get started.Battery life and great quality videos and functionality. We took it snowboarding and the 360 features caught all the action from various angles. It was really neat getting to see the kids all board together.

Not as sharp as some other 360 cameras.

It’s nice, but just not as good as my Insta360 X-5

Disappointing image quality and a frustrating workflow

Honestly, I’m pretty disappointed with this camera. The file sizes are massive, and dealing with the 360 stitching and editing workflow is a total pain. On top of that, the image quality just isn’t up to par with what I expected. It’s more of a hassle than it’s worth.
